2017 Educator Expense Adjustment

1.      Educators must file Form 1040 OR 1040A in order to take the deduction for up to $250 of out-of-pocket classroom expenses. It cannot be claimed on Form 1040EZ.

*2.      The deduction for educator expenses will be claimed on Form 1040, line 23 or Form 1040A, line 16, "Educator Expenses."  Educator Expenses in excess of the $250.00 can be claimed on the Form 1040, Schedule A Line 21, if the taxpayer can itemize their deductions.

* Our accountant stated that we should be aware of some changes in store for 2018. The new tax law is going to eliminate part 2 above - there will be no more Form 1040, Schedule A, Line 21 deductions starting in 2018 - not only for educator expenses, but other Line 21 expenses as well, unless Congress changes that later this year.  However, tax rates are lower in 2018, and the standard deduction was doubled, so that will help offset the change.
